Rebel Without A Cap – Opinions From E. Curtis Johnson

Students at Ridgewood High School in Norridge, Illinois were true to the name of their school’s mascot. During last Friday’s commencement ceremony, graduating seniors did what they were told not to do: throw their caps into the air. The administration denied the graduates their diplomas.

The school staff demanded a public apology and Superintendent Dr. Robert Lupo wrote in a blog, “Perhaps it is the final lesson they will take away from high school: there are consequences for behaviors in life.” Then the school reversed its decision. Images of the incident shows, caps, flying in the air with the phrase, “Home of the Rebels” on the gymnasium’s wall.

I’m E. Curtis Johnson. I learned in school that rebels - rebel. If the school doesn’t want their rebels to rebel, maybe Ridgewood High School should become the home of the compliant, subservient, acquiescent, controllable, yielding kowtowers. However, “The Home of the Submissive” is unlikely to strike fear into athletic opponents.
