I’m E. Curtis Johnson, here to declare that the 4th of July is meaningless. Before you brand me, Un-american, hear me out. What if I said to you: “Merry 25th of December” or “Happy 1st of January.” If you said to me, “Happy April 18th", I may not know what you’re talking about. However, if you wish me a “Merry Christmas,”  “Happy New Year” or “Happy Birthday,” the meaning of the day changes significantly.

We’re able to do whatever we choose to do on the 4th of July because some American colonists declared independence from tyranny. They backed their declaration with their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. When we use the generic term– 4th of july  – or simply recite the date on the calendar and forget what the date signifies, we dishonor what was done for us, and the true reason for the holiday.

Returning to my original statement, the 4th of July is meaningless. I don’t care what your 4th of July is like. I do hope you have a happy, joyous, and celebratory Independence Day.
