In August, a mother in Port Lucie, Florida was arrested for letting her son go to the park to play. Some parents in Leesburg, Florida are demanding recess for their children. One father told Yahoo News that his fourth grade son has never had recess. My generation would have rebelled against a ban on recess by acting up in class, refusing to do our homework, and cutting class a lot! Of course, the kids I hung out with were already doing that stuff. It’s possible that school authorities would have missed our protest. The Centers For Disease Control defines recess as, “…regularly scheduled periods within the elementary school day for unstructured physical activity and play…” It’s interesting that it takes a government agency 14 words to define what children know as one word: recess. There’s a childhood obesity epidemic, but schools limit recess or remove playground equipment. We’re saving children by destroying childhood. There’s only one bad thing about children. They grow up to be adults.
