Travel is expected to be "difficult to impossible" around Billings beginning tomorrow (Tuesday) as an early Spring storm could dump over a foot of snow in our area by Wednesday (4/13).

According to the National Weather Service, heavy snow is expected to begin late tonight (Monday) in Yellowstone County as the Winter Storm Warning takes effect after midnight and continues through Wednesday at 6 pm MDT.

Snowfall rates could exceed an inch per hour on Tuesday morning (4/12) with blizzard conditions possible in Northeastern and Southwestern Yellowstone County and in Musselshell County.

Major impacts of this snowstorm are expected to hit Billings overnight tonight and continue through midday on Tuesday with Billings and Roundup expected to receive 8 to 12 inches of accumulation by Wednesday afternoon. Columbus and Red Lodge could get up to 18 inches, while areas around Cody, Wyoming are only predicted to have 2-3 inches of accumulation.

Wind gusts over 35 mph will make conditions treacherous during this storm, with blowing snow expected to "significantly reduce visibility", and cause deep snowdrifts along roadways through Tuesday evening.

A record April chill will accompany the heavy snow beginning tonight (Monday), with lows dipping into the single digits on Wednesday and Thursday night.

The National Weather Service warns of hypothermia and frostbite danger with the arrival of bitter cold temps, and reminds residents to "disconnect hoses and protect irrigation pipes." The long duration of cold temperatures and wet conditions could also threaten young livestock, according to the N.W.S

For those who are planning to drive through the Winter Storm Warning area, the National Weather Service suggests delaying all travel. If travel is unavoidable, you should make sure to have an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case you are stranded.
