Walmart Apologizes to MSU Professor
KTVQ Billings reports that Walmart has issued an official apology to Montana State University professor Dr. Gilbert Kalonde for racism he suffered at the hands of a Montana Walmart employee in 2016. The ACLU of Montana filed a lawsuit on the professor’s behalf after the employee manually listed [quote] “CLEAN TOILETS” [end quote] as Kalonde’s profession on a fishing license he was renewing in February of 2016. In August of that year, the ACLU filed a Montana Human Rights Bureau complaint, claiming that Walmart discriminated against him on the basis of race. ACLU of Montana Executive Director Caitlin Borgmann applauded Kalonde for standing up to Walmart. Kalonde hadn’t noticed the occupation listed on the license until after he bought it. The Montana Racial Equity Project said we have a responsibility to stand behind the disenfranchised, marginalized, and oppressed.
