MSU Economist Bullish on GMOs
Retired Montana State University economist Gary Brester says U.S. farms are producing more food per acre because of genetically modified crops than farmers in Europe where genetically modified organism are banned. Brester told attendees at the Montana Farm Bureau Federation convention in Billings that farmers are producing more crops per acre because of genetically-modified organisms. The convention brought 400 Montana farmers to Billings this week.
But, 19 more countries join a long list of nations to completely ban, or severely restrict GMOs — as well as the pesticides that go with them. While the World Health Organization proclaimed GMOs completely safe, there are many who say GMO crop DNA is artificially altered, which would not happen in nature. They’re introducing genes from different species to boost plant’s yield, resistance to pests and herbicides, without regard for long-term effect.
