It's no secret that living in Montana can be costly. Although, it doesn't seem to stop folks from moving to The Treasure State.

With real estate prices among some of the most expensive in the country, one could assume that compared to other states, Montanans must be doing well when it comes to income, right? Yeah, not so much.

We have new data from our friends at WalletHub regarding where Montana ranks compared to the other states regarding yearly salary and (spoiler alert), we're not near the top.

According to the data, the national median income across the United States is just under 75 thousand dollars. (In Montana that average is 68,937.00) You don't have to be a mathematician to know that in more popular parts of Montana, that isn't enough to buy you a home.

According to WalletHub, Montana ranks 37 out of 50 when it comes to states with the highest income. Taking a look at the map, Montana is in last place in our region, with all of the surrounding states ranked higher than Big Sky Country.

One of the factors in determining the ranking is based on the annual income of the bottom 20 percent. In Montana, that income is right around 15 thousand dollars a year. What about those in the Top 5 percent? That number is just under 400 thousand per year at an average of 395 thousand.
