Hundreds Attend City Council Gun Ordinance Hearing [YouTube]
Over 300 people jammed into the Missoula City Council Meeting room Monday night to let their voices be heard for and against a proposed gun control background check ordinance.
Representatives from Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense in America and the National Rifle Association opened the comment period.
"Since this ordinance has been released, we've been out talking to people and we've gathered over 1,200 signatures on a petition supporting the ordinance," said a proponent.
"The killer in Oregon purchased his weapon from a licensed gun dealer after a background check, just like in Seattle, Washington, Tucson, Arizona, Virginia Tech and Aurora, Colorado," said a representative of the NRA.
The public comment period reflected the same difference of opinion. The council took public comments for over three hours. City Clerk Marti Rehbein said before the testimony began that the council had received 336 comments for the proposed ordinance and only 79 opposed.
The council did not take a vote on the ordinance. A final reading is scheduled for November 2, one day prior to the general election.
