U.S. Navy Using Robot Sharks Now — Yes, Robot Sharks — Calling Them ‘Ghost Swimmers’

The Navy has nicknamed these 5-foot-long, 100-pound automated underwater drones "Robo-tuna" because they're apparently supposed to more closely resemble a bluefin tuna—but take a look at that thing in the video and tell us that's not a damn shark. Last we checked, if it has a shark fin, it's a shark.

The project is called Silent NEMO, and the drones are still in the testing phase at this point. The goal is to create a fleet of these robot sharks -- sorry, Ghost Swimmers, as they're officially named -- that "could be used to inspect the hull of a ship, check waters for threats such as mines or protrusions, deliver payloads including sonar and guidance packages, and access otherwise denied areas."

Anyway, no word yet as to when they'll get laser beams attached to their heads.
