Montana FWP Hunting Regulation Proposals Are Open For Public Comment
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks are holding public meetings throughout the state to provide information, answer questions, and gather input on the tentative 2018-19 hunting regulation proposals. FWP Information and Education Program Manager Vivaca Crowser says there is a proposal for reinstituting an either sex white tail season during the first nine days of general season.
“This is something that if you have been here a while and hunted around here for a while, you will remember it being in place about 10 years ago, but then we backed off on that as our white tail numbers went down,” said Crowser. “We are seeing growing populations of white tails across the region so we think it is time to bring that back. That is one proposal that hunter will want to be aware of.”
According to Crowser, FWP is also trying to simplify elk regulations by bringing in an over the counter B license.
“That would be for a second elk, an antlerless elk, that would be region wide,” Crowser said. “In most hunting districts there would be one license that you could use anywhere. It is just for private lands, but we are hoping it makes it simpler with hunter access for those that have land owner relationships already established or want to try and get some of that set up, one license would be eligible across the region.”
For more information on all the proposals around the state, and to comment, folks can go to fwp.mt.gov. Comments are due by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 24. The Fish and Wildlife Commission will review comments and recommendations and adopt final regulations at their February 15 meeting in Helena.
