Powerhouse Announces Run for Mayor of Montana’s Largest City
Big news for Montana's largest city, as Billings City Council member Jennifer Owen announces a run for mayor.
I got to hear her speak at an event recently, and she is a powerhouse who is ready to bring some real vision to Billings if you ask me.
One thing that impressed me so far with her work on the city council is her focus on public safety. She dove into the city budget and found millions of dollars to put towards public safety- law enforcement- without a tax increase. It seems all too often, Billings has put public safety on the back burner. They fund all this other stuff and then tell taxpayers- oh, you want public safety, you gotta pay extra for that. I think Owen can also put Billings on a more conservative, pro business path.
In a press release announcing her run for mayor, Owen says, “Billings deserves safe neighborhoods, a better quality of life, and a local government that respects your tax dollars. Billings is facing some real challenges. It is time for serious leadership and a clear vision to move our community forward.”
She was first elected to the Billings City Council in 2021.
In her press release she talks about how she "has focused on improving accountability in the City’s budget, prioritizing strategies to reduce family violence in Billings, and working across jurisdictions to strengthen our local criminal justice system."
What's her vision for Billings?
"Owen’s vision for Billings includes encouraging private investment by focusing on the basics: public safety, strong infrastructure, and a shared vision for growth that protects our community values."
What's her background?
"A Billings native, Jennifer is an attorney with a background in energy development, agriculture, transportation, family law and child welfare, education, and workforce development. In addition to her role on Council, Jennifer is a trustee at Rocky Mountain College, Vice President of the Billings Child Abuse Prevention Foundation, and a board member for New Day, Inc."
