My Five Reason Why Spring is The Best Time of Year in Montana

Ah, springtime in Montana—there's truly nothing quite like it.

As the snow melts away and the sun starts to peek out from behind those stubborn clouds, the whole state comes alive with a burst of color and energy. And as much as I love summer and fall, here's why I believe spring is the absolute best time of year in Montana.

1. The weather.

Duh. I strongly dislike winter and as much as I love Montana, winter here is long. I know I'm not alone on this. Spring can be a little unpredictable, yes. But it's mostly ideal between mid-May and mid-June with temps around 70 and far more sunshine than we've seen for the last 6 months. It's Goldilocks weather right now.

2. Everything is so. darn. green.

Unless you're in the mountains of Montana with pine trees everywhere, most of the state is essentially one color for nine months out of the year: brown. Perhaps brown mixed with white when it snows. Talk about monochrome.

We get most of our rain this time of year and for a month or two, everything in Montana is brilliantly green. The rolling foothills switch from boring brown to deep emerald. Alfalfa fields are growing and trees have leaves again. The area around Roscoe makes me think of places like Ireland and Scotland.

3. It's not smokey yet.

Unfortunately, parts of northern Montana have already experienced smoke-filled skies from wildfires in Canada this spring. But for the most part, our air hasn't become the all-too-familiar haze of forest fire smoke that blankets the state from summer till snowfall.

4. The mosquitos aren't awful.

This awesome, bug-free period doesn't last long; I'm pretty sure I slapped my first mosquito a few days ago.

5. We have the perfect amount of daylight.

I grumble about the time change when it happens in March, but by mid-May, I feel we have the perfect time/day/light balance. The sunrise is just before 6 AM and sets around 8:30 PM. Who can complain about that?
