West’s Undefeated Season Continues Through Crosstown Matchups
West faced Skyview last week, where they dismantled the Falcons with ease during West’s homecoming game. With 570 yards off of 63 offensive plays, West continued their undefeated streak with a 47-7 win over Skyview. We caught up with Coach Stanton this week for his thoughts.
CJ Johnson went for 365 yards in the air on 34 attempts, completing 21 of them with 1 interception early in the first. “He spins it really well” Coach Stanton said. “Every kid from last year’s team to this year’s says he has such a catchable ball.” When asked about the contributions from the team, CJ said “We have a lot of weapons, it was real easy to connect with them.”
Bjornstad is now the 3rd leading rusher in AA.
West held Camble Bjornstad (the 3rd leading rusher in AA) to just 20 yards off of 7 carries, helped by injury as he went out late in the first half. “We were allowed to play more guys than we had in the last game (against Senior). We were able to keep our two-way guys fresh, and that helped us into the second half.” Coach Stanton remarked when asked about his defense’s performance on the night. “I thought our kids played fast, if we clean up a few things I think we could be a pretty good team.
“This game was good for us, because we needed some confidence on the offensive line, and they played pretty well.” Coach Stanton said, contributing to the effort of the men in the trenches toward the big win. “Our first goal is to always win the city, and I think we’ve done that the last 7 years. Our second is to win the Eastern AA, and this sets us up well for the rest of the year by winning this game.”
Up Next: West vs Bozeman.
“We always have battles against Bozeman. [The] last 4-5 years have been really tight games.” Said Stanton on their next matchup. “The winner of [Bozeman-West] usually goes on to win the Eastern AA.” West heads to Bozeman this Friday to take on the 3-2 Hawks who are coming off a 35-27 loss against the Gallatin Raptors.
