Do You Own a Wyze Cam, Montana? You Might Want To Throw It Out.
With the amount of crime popping up across Montana in the last few years, it is understandable to expect homeowners and renters to wish to protect their belongings... and, do so with more than just a deadbolt on the door, locked windows... and their armory in the spare bedroom.
Locking Doors & A Weapon Aren't Enough
In our modern world, I'd say a good chunk of Montanans likely have some form of security camera for their homes. May it be just a video doorbell, or the whole nine yards... Montanans are starting to take security seriously.
Sure, you and your weapon can stop thieves at your home when... you are home. But, if someone hits home when everyone is away... having security cameras can make solving the crime a lot easier.
Wyze Cam... Not So Wise
Started back in 2017, Wyze Labs is a startup formed by former Amazon employees. They released their first Wyze Cam in October 2017, and have been a part of the "home security" business since.
That's not without issues. Since starting, the company has faced 3 security incidents...
- In December 2019, they acknowledged a server leak had exposed details of around 2.4 MILLION customers.
- They responded by logging ALL users out of their accounts, requiring re-authentication.
- In 2022, Security Firm BitDefender reported the WyzeCam 1 was discontinued, not due to age, but due to a security issue they reported to WyzeLabs 3 years prior. Wyze did not make any public comment on the issues.
- Now, Feb 16th, 2024...
13,000 Users. Unacceptable.
It was announced on Gizmodo today that the company experienced yet ANOTHER security incident related to these cams, allowing 13,000 users to see into others' homes once more.
Wyze goes on to say only about...
About 13,000 Wyze users received thumbnails from cameras that were not their own and 1,504 users tapped on them.
What was WyzeLabs response to their loyal customers? Gizmodo said the company "Apologized to users, and admitted the email must be disappointing news."
What caused it? Who cares. What matters here is this... if YOU own a Wyze Cam for your home security... throw that thing out.
There are TONS of options to pick from, everything from cams with monthly cloud fees... to cams that are hard-wired, and no monthly cost you can find at Costco.
Just... take your security and safety seriously. And get rid of this junk.
