A Montana Officer’s Death Highlights Startling Hunting Statistic
We are all aware that it’s hunting season across the country and here in Montana it's no different. Hunting is a big part of many people's lives here in Big Sky Country and it’s a time-honored tradition. As a hunter myself, the first thing we are all taught is safety. Safety is the number one priority when heading out into the woods with a weapon. But not only that, there are so many things that can happen while hunting like environmental factors, getting lost, or even finding yourself in a freak accident. It's a risk all hunters take, no matter how prepared or knowledgeable you are about the great outdoors.
A study by Florida-based injury lawyers Anidjar & Levine revealed which states are most at risk of hunting accidents this season. Based on data from the FBI and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the study looked at the number of long-gun firearm checks and hunting licenses issued per 100,000 people to determine which states had the most hunters and, therefore, the most potential for accidents.

Wyoming topped the list as the state most at risk, but Montana wasn’t far behind, ranking second with a risk score of 9.2. That comes from an average of 2,758 long-gun firearm checks and more than 20,000 hunting licenses issued per 100,000 residents this year. With so many of us heading into the backcountry each season, it’s a reminder that safety in the field is something that can never be overlooked.
Sadly, this year’s hunting season has already seen tragedy hit close to home. The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office reported that Detention Sergeant Michael Flohr was found deceased in a hunting accident in Magpie Gulch. The department described him as “an exceptional leader, officer, husband, father, and friend,” and the entire community is mourning the loss. No cause has been given.
