Very few details have been shared so far about how it might have happened.

Perhaps that is because no one was close enough to see what transpired. Or it occurred so quickly that there was no time to react. And it could be a secret that a powerful Montana river may keep.

What is known is that a family vacation was marred by a horrific tragedy this past week. Associated Press reported that a woman from Kentucky went missing last Friday while she was fishing the Yellowstone River. The incident occurred close to Carter's Bridge, only a few miles from Livingston.

An internet search of the Carter's Bridge Fishing Access Site suggests a popular, well-used area, with amenities that include a toilet and gravel boat launch. In other words, this was not some remote wilderness adventure in forbidden waters. Naturally, that does not mean that conditions can't sometimes be treacherous, even as river levels recede during a hot and dry Montana August.

And sadly, Park County Search and Rescue personnel came upon a grim discovery a couple of hours later and a few miles downstream.

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported that the victim was identified as 62-year-old Michaela Bray of Newport, Kentucky. Ms. Bray was in Montana visiting family.

Our hearts certainly go out to her family during this difficult time.
