DOGE Ends Leases on Multiple Government Offices in Montana

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) recently unveiled plans to terminate nearly four dozen leases for Social Security offices nationwide, including two locations in Montana.

The Social Security offices in Missoula and Kalispell are on the chopping block, signaling an uncertain future for these government buildings.

DOGE has disclosed that the termination details for the Missoula and Kalispell offices are still in flux. While the lessor and customer have been informed, a concrete strategy for the closures is currently in the works.

Annual Lease Savings in Montana

The closure of the Missoula Social Security office is estimated to result in an annual lease cost savings of $262,922, while shuttering the Kalispell office could save $151,400 per year. Collectively, the termination of these two leases is projected to yield a total of $414,322 in annual lease savings.

Impact on Other Agencies

Beyond the Social Security offices, several other government agencies across Montana are facing lease terminations as listed on the DOGE website. Border Control Facilities in Shelby, Bureau of Indian Affairs in Pablo, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in Helena, and other agencies, including the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service in Billings, are poised for significant annual lease savings through terminations marked as "Termination via Mass Mod."

Savings Achieved Through Montana Office Closures

To date, the closure of each Montana office listed on the DOGE website, including the two Social Security offices, totals a savings of $1,276,646 per year.

Impact of DOGE's Cost-Cutting Efforts

DOGE's cost-cutting initiatives have already resulted in a substantial $105 billion reduction in federal funding as of March 7. By implementing measures such as asset sales, contract/lease cancellations, and regulatory savings, DOGE says it aims to alleviate the burden on taxpayers, with an estimated individual savings of $652.17 per taxpayer so far, based on the collective impact on 161 million federal taxpayers.
