Planting Seeds of Hope in Yellowstone County
In June 2022, something extraordinary began to take root in Eastern Montana. Friends of the Children Eastern Montana launched with a bold mission: to walk alongside the children who need it most and help rewrite the future of our community, one trusting relationship at a time.
Why Mentorship Matters More Than Ever
Every year, approximately 2,200 children in Montana enter foster care, and about 550 of them are in Yellowstone County alone. Indigenous youth make up only 9% of the population under 19, yet they represent half of the local foster care population.
Behind these numbers are stories of loss, adversity, systemic inequality, and a pressing need for action. Friends of the Children steps in where trauma and poverty have left gaps, offering not just mentorship but consistency, care, and commitment.
The Power of a “Friend”
Unlike traditional volunteer-based mentoring programs, Friends of the Children employs full-time, professional mentors, called “Friends,” who spend 4 hours every week, one-on-one, with each child.
These mentors come from the very communities they serve. Through every birthday, challenge, and milestone, a Friend is there. Not just for the good times, but no matter what.
A Proven Model with Life-Changing Results
The outcomes speak volumes: 92% of program graduates go on to pursue post-secondary education, enlist in the military, or join the workforce. 93% avoid involvement with the juvenile justice system. And 98% delay parenthood until after their teen years.

Holistic Support for Families, Too
Friends of the Children doesn’t just work with the kids - they support the entire family. Their two-generation model helps caregivers access resources and reach their own goals, strengthening the entire household. After all, when families thrive, children do too. With most program households living below the poverty line and averaging five members, this wraparound support makes a world of difference.
Investing in Our Community’s Future
Right now, Friends of the Children Eastern Montana is growing. From 16 youth in their first cohort to a goal of 48 by spring of this year, the momentum is building.
By 2028, they hope to increase their reach by 75%, serving more families and hiring more Friends. To do that, they’re hoping to raise $1.1 million, and every dollar helps open the door to a brighter future for a child.
