• Montana introduced a new state park in January 2025, located near the town of Winifred

Hearing for New State Park in Montana Coming Soon

Just in case you missed it, The State of Montana introduced an all-new area for recreation in January of this year.  The new 109.43-acre Judith Landing property at the confluence of the Missouri and Judith Rivers in Central Montana is near Winifred.

Managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks the park is still undeveloped, but there could be some major changes coming to it soon.  Several public gatherings and discussions are planned for recreationists to voice opinions coming in May.

History Behind the New Judith Landing State Park in Montana

The new park features six historic structures including the Judith Landing store/warehouse, a granite and sandstone structure that was built in 1882.  There are other historic structures including the old log Post Office, a root cellar, schoolhouse, and blacksmith shop.

According to MWFP, the area has been in use for centuries:

Native people, such as the Blackfeet, the Assiniboine, and many others, gathered here, using the landing as a seasonal camp. In May 1805, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark also camped in this valley, with Clark naming the Judith River after his future wife.

The area is also known for paleontologist Ferdinand Hayden, who, in 1855, collected the first dinosaur remains documented in North America.

How to Learn More and Become Involved with Public Hearings in Central Montana

Public hearings discussing plans for development of the new park are scheduled for various towns in central Montana.  MFWP will conduct them as follows:
