New Rankings Show Just How Windy Montana Really Is
Is Montana The Windiest State In America
Chicago might be called the Windy City, but Great Falls actually has a higher average wind speed.
So you’d think that probably means Montana is the windiest state in America, right? Nope.

How Average Wind Speed Is Measured By State
Now, I’m definitely not saying Montana isn’t windy, because that would just be a lie, and I was raised better than that.
This state is windy. It just turns out we’re not technically the windiest in the country, at least not according to World Population Review.
There are a bunch of different ways to measure wind, but one of the simplest is average wind speed by state. So where did Montana land?
Montana Consistently Ranks Near the Top For Wind
According to World Population Review, South Dakota took the top spot with an average wind speed of 21.32 mph, while Montana came in right behind it at #2 with 21.03 mph.
So we might not be number one, but looking at the data, Montana is pretty much always near the top when it comes to wind.
In fact, there was only one wind-related category where Montana didn’t crack the top five, and that was wind speed measured at 33 feet. Even then, we still landed in the top 10.
