Montana’s Digital Driver’s License Is Now On Your iPhone

Montana Drivers Can Now Add Their License To Apple Wallet

How many apps do you use every day? Maybe you use it for banking, or hospital records, or your kids' school newsletters.

Well, if you have an iPhone, you can now add your driver's license to that list.

Where You Can Use Your Digital Montana Driver's License

According to Lifehacker, Montana is one of just 16 states that allow residents to add their driver's license or state ID to Apple Wallet.

It's a pretty slick feature that lets you use your phone to verify your identity at participating businesses and select airport security checkpoints. That includes Great Falls International Airport, along with airports in Billings, Bozeman, and Missoula.

Here's the thing, though. This digital ID doesn't replace your physical driver's license. Montana's Motor Vehicle Division says you should still carry your actual card because not every business or agency accepts the digital version just yet.

If you want to get it set up, the process is pretty simple.

How To Add Your License To Apple Wallet

First, open the Wallet app on your iPhone and tap the plus sign in the upper-right corner. Select "Driver's License or State ID" and choose Montana.

You'll need your physical ID so you can scan both the front and back. From there, just follow the identity verification steps and submit your information for the state to approve.

Once Montana approves it, your ID will show up in Apple Wallet. The whole process is free, and you can even use it with a compatible Apple Watch.

As someone who's always forgetting their wallet, I can see this being a lifesaver. Just keep in mind that you can't count on it working everywhere you might need to show your ID, so you'll still want to keep that physical card on hand.

You can find the official setup instructions on the Montana Motor Vehicle Division website.
