Surprise: Great Falls Gets Hit By An Earthquake
An Unexpected Earthquake Shakes Montana
Well, who had an earthquake on January 29, 2026 on their bingo card? Because that one definitely caught me off guard.
If you were anything like me, just sitting at your desk minding your own business, you probably had a pretty serious “what was that?” moment around 12:41 pm here in north central Montana.

Earthquake Alerts: Hit or Miss
It happened fast. A few coworkers and I all looked at each other at the same time and immediately asked, “Was that an earthquake?” Before anyone could even process it, it was already over.
As I walked back to grab my phone, I noticed an alert saying an earthquake was imminent and just 6.4 miles away from Great Falls.
The timing was almost funny, because according to the timestamp, it looks like the notification hit right as the shockwave did.
Earthquakes In Montana Are Rare But Not Impossible
Not everyone got that alert though. One of my coworkers also has an Android like I do and never received a warning. Not that it would have helped much anyway. I am curious if anyone with an iPhone got an advanced heads-up.
Earthquakes are not unheard of here under the Big Sky, but this one definitely felt bigger than what we are used to. It was enough to stop everyone in their tracks for a moment.
Montana might feel pretty rock solid most days, but this was a good reminder that the ground beneath us is always moving, both literally and figuratively.
