2025’s Most Popular Dog Names in Montana

Dogs - and their personalities -  are as colorful as their names. Most of us probably remember the name of every dog we've owned, from our first childhood puppy to the latest member of our family.

Considering the average lifespan of a dog is 10 to 13 years, most people will own at least five or six dogs in their lifetime (if you only own one dog at a time, of course). Dogs in my life have been named Molly, Bob, Cash, Hershey, Jojo, Lila, Harrison, Mac, and Winston.

According to a survey by the American Pet Products Association, they've determined the most popular dog names in the US and each state for 2025. Before we get to Montana's most popular dog names, here are the top dog names in America.

1. Luna
2. Bella
3. Charlie
4. Max
5. Daisy

Here in Montana, they say the top dog names for 2025 are the following:

1. Otter
2. Taffy/Charlie (tie)
3. Bailey/Gus/Koda/Nova (apparently a four-way tie)

I know two people with dogs named Charlie. It's the 3rd most popular in the US, so it stands to reason that it's also a common dog name in Montana. But Otter and Taffy? I'm confident I've never met a dog with either of those names.

The survey reveals that foods remain popular name choices for dogs nationwide, including Pepper, Oreo, Honey, Ginger, Olive, Cookie, Mochi, and Peanut in the top 100.

The American Pet Products Association reports that 68 million households have a dog, making them the top pet. 49 million households have a cat, and fish round out the top 3 pets, found in 10 million US households.
